It is not uncommon that the KetoScan displays different results compared to urine ketone strips or blood ketone meter.
Each type of test kits uses different biological sample to detect ketones. These samples have comparatively different organic compounds.
During ketosis, ketones are released and these ketones are comprised of three types
- Acetoacetate
- Betahydroxybutyrate (BHB)
- Acetone

Urine ketone strips
The urine strips detects acetoacetate in the urine sample. Acetoacetate is the first ketone that is produced in the liver.
The results are determined by the change of colour on the strip
Blood ketone meter
The meter detects beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in the blood sample. BHB is a chemical that is produced by the body and it acts as a source of energy when carbohydrates are low in the body system
The results in blood ketone meters are displayed in millimoles per litre (mmol/L).
KetoScan Mini
The KetoScanmini detects acetone in the breath sample. Acetone is a byproduct of acetoacetate.
The results are presented in parts per million (ppm)
While Acetoacetate, BHB and acetone are related to one another, they are essentially different compounds thus it is not recommended to compare results if between different type of test.
